Some women have it. Some don’t. I definitely do, always have had. That is, the mothering instinct. You asked me once how I felt about not being able to have a baby. I think I stumbled on sad and disappointed, but for me and many like me, the true sentiment is more than that.

When my baby brother was brought home from hospital in 1968, I remember claiming him as my own and he spent much of his first year in my dolls pram, being rattled around the garden.
